What a question!
I believe that this is The question, The great wonder of every human being in life. Who do I really want to become? Tomorrow, in one year, in ten years… How do I want to be remembered at the end of my life and after I would have reach the other realm? What legacy do I want to leave behind me?
Legacy…that is another concept that I have never really thought about. Actually, I am wondering while writing this if it even came up once in my mind. We often think that legacy is only reserved for the great people of our world. You know, for the ones that have achieved something great, something big in their lives and that they are leaving a real legacy for the world to enjoy and take advantage.
When I truly think about the definition, I realise that every single of us will leave a legacy. Of course, not everyone will leave the same behind but we will all leave a mark on the world, at our own scale. And careful here, I am absolutely not talking about money like a heritage or inheritance, but like a contribution.
A contribution, so the legacy, isn’t always something good. Lots of people have left a really bad legacy to the world that is why it is really important that we truly think about it to make sure we are leaving something beautiful for the others to enjoy. It does not have to be something amazing that would change the world. Again, we have to think at our own scale, at our own level. Because as I said above, whatever happens, we will be leaving a legacy. To our family, to our friends, to our children, to the people we have encountered and everyone that has been and will be affected by our life, our presence on hearth.
So the legacy is something absolutely crucial to think about and when we know what we want to leave behind, the question of who we want to become, becomes the genesis of all things in our lives.
About 2 years ago, I decided to restart my life from scratch. I moved to another country, in a place where I didn’t know a single person, took on a new job far from what I used to do. New environment. A clean slate where I could rebuild a new self. It was a real moment of chaos for me, but this is where order can be created. No one knew me and after some time to adjust to that new place and starting to encounter new people, making new friends, I realised I could show a totally new me. My past didn’t have any place in that new environment, with those new relationships.
I asked myself, what kind of person I would like them know. The first two words that came up straightaway were Reliable and Authentic. Because those are the two things I want to find in others that I want to surround myself with.
I want to be seen as a man, as a person on whom people can count on. A person that is showing his true left and not trying to play a role so I can look better than I really am. I have been playing a role for many, many years, actually I believe most of my life. I created that alter ego who, little by little, took over and I simply lost myself. I was in a constant blurry state and without a clear vision, things just become really complicated. I simply made my own life hard by the choices I have made. Because it was easier to play a role, because I took the easy path, my life became really hard.
I remember reading a famous quote saying “Make easy choices and you’ll live a hard life. Make hard choices and you’ll live an easy life”. It is the first half of a well-known stoic quote, which comes from Jerzy Gregorek. And the more I grow up, the more I realise how true this is.
It is much harder to be your true self in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else. And this also comes from a famous quote. From the American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson: “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”. Great accomplishments do not come easy. That’s the hard choice.
Since, I have been working harder and harder every day to become the person I aspire to be. The Man that I want to offer to the world. Someone that has dreams and do his best to go after them. Someone that is helpful towards others. Someone that has work so much on himself to become the best version he can be in this life that he is bringing light to other, he is lifting up every single person he encounters. I want to become a Man that is inspired by others and inspire others. I want to become a Man that is bringing something to the world, again at my own scale, and leaving this place a bit better than how I found it. Isn’t it our mission? Leaving the world, a better place after our passing? That’s what I truly believe today and I have to admit that this is giving life a real meaning. It is giving a real meaning to all that suffering and pain.
And here is a quote that would summarise that perfectly: “To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.” – Friedrich Nietzsche.
And you, my friend, who do you really want to become?
You don’t have to have an answer right now. Think about it. Take some alone time, not once because you might not come up with an answer that easily, think about it and repeat as much as you need to.
I wrote some other posts that can help you for that like “The True Power of Your Alone Time” and the last one I published “Simplicity Means Clear Vision”. I know I am not a good writer but I am getting better every day by practicing but the point is, my words might inspire you. Give you a new perspective. Who knows.
I believe in you my friend 💖
